Our take

About Kilindi

Kilindi is an intimate villa retreat on Zanzibar’s north-west coast, near Kendwa, with white-domed pavilions scattered through extensive tropical gardens. It is particularly appealing after safari, when private outdoor space, a personal pool and an unhurried day matter more than a busy resort programme. The accommodation and ocean-facing shared areas have a distinctive architectural character, making the property feel individual rather than part of a conventional beach-hotel formula.

Originally designed for Benny Andersson of ABBA, Kilindi combines restrained Scandinavian influences with the arched forms and domed roofs associated with Zanzibar’s wider cultural heritage. The estate extends across approximately 50 acres, allowing the villas to sit within their own gardens. Shuttered windows and broad openings make the landscape part of the interiors. The main pavilion overlooks a 25-metre infinity pool and the Indian Ocean, offering a shared alternative to each villa’s private pool. The atmosphere is focused on privacy, nature and time together, with villa-host service helping guests organise their own rhythm.

01

Accommodation

Rooms

There are 15 villas, with garden-view and ocean-view categories. Each offers a veranda, outdoor loungers and a private plunge pool, while the separate bathroom area has a rainfall shower and twin vanity basins. The current villa descriptions list air conditioning, Wi-Fi, a minibar and tea and coffee facilities. Ocean-view accommodation is worth considering when the outlook is a priority; a garden villa gives a more enclosed tropical setting. A two-bedroom garden-view option has two private pools and can accommodate additional adults by arrangement. The property specifically describes this configuration for families with children aged 18 or over, so it should not be treated as a conventional young-family villa.

Food & drink

Dining

The Old Drift Restaurant and Bar looks over the infinity pool and ocean, serving dishes that combine European and Zanzibari influences. Terrace dining allows guests to enjoy the view without leaving the main pavilion. More private experiences include an in-villa breakfast, a floating breakfast in your pool and a five-course evening meal. Dining by Design can involve a beach barbecue or champagne and canapés aboard a dhow at sunset. Guests interested in Zanzibar’s food can also arrange a chef-led cooking experience, preparing local dishes before enjoying the results. Special experiences should be reserved and their inclusions checked in advance.

What to do

Activities

The garden spa includes treatment pavilions and an ocean-facing relaxation area. Its menu draws on local ingredients, including spices, coffee and botanical oils, with massages and body treatments offering a quieter counterpart to safari. Paddleboarding and kayaking are offered in the bay, while walking can explore the nearby beaches and surroundings. Published excursion options include a historical town tour, an island spice tour, snorkelling trips and deep-sea fishing. These are choices to arrange rather than activities to assume are included each day; sea conditions and the length of the outing help determine what is sensible for your stay.
