Our take

About Serian South

Serian South is a seasonal tented camp set on the southernmost edge of the short-grass plains in the Serengeti. From mid-December to May, when the herds migrate back for the birthing season, it offers a rare opportunity to witness one of nature’s most extraordinary events from a remarkably private, off-grid camp away from the crowds.

Serian South belongs to the family of safari camps managed by Alex Walker’s Serian — a collection known for intimate scale, personal guiding, and a deep-bush experience. The camp is deliberately simple and low-impact, with elegant safari-style tents, communal mess and lounge areas, and a philosophy that emphasises connection with wilderness, walking safaris and cultural encounters, often with local hunter-gatherer guides.

01

Accommodation

Rooms

There are six spacious traditional safari tents (including a family/two-tent suite), each with en-suite facilities — a flush toilet and bucket shower — plus classic safari beds, Persian rugs and comfortable furnishings. The tents are built for comfort but retain a rustic, camp-style feel; they’re positioned to make the most of the sweeping views over the plains where the wildebeest calving grounds lie.

02

Food & drink

Dining

Meals are served “en famille” in a candle-lit mess tent where guests gather to share stories of the day. Dining is relaxed, convivial and designed to feel like home in the bush. On clear nights, bush dinners and sundowners under the stars provide a romantic and atmospheric alternative.

What to do

Activities

Private vehicle and guide arrangements allow game drives to follow your interests across the southern plains. Seasonal herds, calving and predators are possibilities rather than guaranteed events. Walking and overnight wilderness experiences can be discussed for the particular camp position, with guiding, permissions, fitness and age requirements confirmed before booking.

Planning your stay

How Serian South fits your journey.

We would allow three or four nights when the southern operating season matches your trip. Combine with Ngorongoro for a varied northern circuit, then add beach time if desired. The southern plains deserve several days rather than one rushed stop between longer drives. Specialist walking and fly camping can be discussed as a separate extension, with suitable dates, permissions and guide availability confirmed before booking.

The right fit

Would Serian South suit you?

Who it suits

Travellers seeking a traditional tented safari with the southern plains and seasonal wildlife as its focus. It merits comparison when guiding and time in the field matter more than permanent-lodge facilities.

Things to consider

Serian South is seasonal, so check operating dates before arranging flights. It is not a northern river-crossing base. Calving and predator activity are natural events rather than spectacles that can be scheduled.

Useful to know

Serian South FAQs.

Is Serian South open throughout the year?

It is a seasonal southern-plains camp. We confirm the actual operating dates and camp position for your trip rather than assume year-round availability.

Is Serian South a Mara River camp?

No. Its safari focus is the southern Serengeti plains. Northern river crossings are a separate location and seasonal experience.

Is it a good starting point for calving-season travel?

It is an option to compare when the herds are expected in the southern ecosystem. Births and predator sightings vary, so the itinerary should allow time without promising particular events.

Does it have family accommodation?

A family/two-tent suite is described in the camp layout. We confirm the connection, sleeping arrangement and children’s suitability for your dates.
