Our take
Plan for the ecosystem,
not one crossing.
The Great Migration is a year-round wildlife story, not simply a river crossing. A Tanzania migration safari should place you in the right part of the Serengeti for your dates, with enough time for the herds, resident big cats and the wider landscape.
The herds move through the wider Serengeti ecosystem throughout the year, with timing governed by rainfall and grazing. We choose between the southern plains, western corridor and northern Serengeti according to your dates, rather than treating the Migration as a single July-to-October event.
The strongest migration safari is still a complete safari. It should allow time for resident wildlife, excellent guiding and the character of the landscape, rather than reducing the journey to a single crossing that nobody can schedule.

Choose an area before a camp
Start with your travel month, then compare the southern plains, western corridor and northern Serengeti. Spending more on a lodge does not compensate for a poor seasonal location.
Best time to visit TanzaniaAllow time for the whole safari
The herds can move or split, and river crossings happen on their own schedule. Several nights in one well-chosen area gives you a fuller safari than a rushed crossing-focused stop.

Your questions
Serengeti Great Migration Safaris in Tanzania FAQs.
When is the best time to see the Great Migration in Tanzania?
The answer depends on the experience you want. January to March broadly favours the southern Serengeti and Ndutu, April to June the movement north and west, and July to October the northern Serengeti. Rainfall and grazing can shift these patterns, so camp position is chosen around your exact dates.
When is the Serengeti calving season?
The main calving period is usually around January to March, with February often a focus. The herds generally gather on the southern plains and around Ndutu. Births and predator encounters cannot be scheduled, and the best camp position depends on conditions.
Can you guarantee a Mara River crossing?
No. River crossings are natural events. Herds can wait, change direction or cross when you are elsewhere. We plan useful access and enough time in the region, but recommend a complete wildlife safari rather than making a crossing the only measure of success.
How many nights do we need in the Serengeti?
Three nights can fit a shorter itinerary; four or more gives greater flexibility for exploring a well-chosen area. Our Great Migration and Big 5 example has three Serengeti nights, while the Serengeti and Zanzibar route has four. Either can be extended.
How much does a Great Migration safari cost?
Our Great Migration and Big 5 itinerary starts from £4,000 per person for six nights, based on two adults sharing. This is an illustrative guide. Season, camps, internal flights and guiding arrangements affect the quote, and international flights are confirmed separately.
Can we add Zanzibar after a migration safari?
Yes. The Serengeti and Zanzibar itinerary combines four safari nights with seven on the coast and an arrival night in Arusha. We check flight connections and beach conditions before fixing the route. The safari area can change to suit the month.
