Our take

About Chada Katavi

Chada Katavi is a remote and intimate safari camp located in Tanzania’s Katavi National Park, one of Africa’s most unspoiled and least-visited wildlife areas. Nestled on the edge of the Chada Plain, the camp offers a classic bush experience, making it ideal for travellers seeking a deep connection with nature.

Established by Nomad Tanzania, Chada Katavi is designed to blend seamlessly with its natural surroundings, offering a minimalist yet comfortable safari experience. The camp operates seasonally, open from mid-June to mid-November, aligning with the dry season when wildlife congregates around the remaining water sources, providing exceptional game viewing opportunities. Its commitment to low-impact tourism ensures that guests can enjoy the wilderness responsibly.

What to do

Activities

Chada Katavi offers a range of activities designed to showcase the park’s rich biodiversity. Guests can embark on game drives in open 4WD vehicles, guided walking safaris led by experienced naturalists, and, for the more adventurous, fly camping excursions that involve sleeping under the stars in a remote location. Bird watching and cultural visits to nearby communities are also available, providing a well-rounded exploration of the region.

Planning your stay

How Chada Katavi fits your journey.

Plan Chada around Katavi’s seasonal access and the western Tanzania flight schedule. A Mahale extension creates a strong wildlife contrast, but this remote combination needs enough time and careful connections.

The right fit

Would Chada Katavi suit you?

Who it suits

Travellers who value remoteness, a traditional canvas camp and a safari away from the established northern circuit.

Things to consider

The journey is more involved than a northern road safari. Bucket showers and a simple bush-camp atmosphere should suit your expectations, and wildlife concentrations vary by season.

Useful to know

Chada Katavi FAQs.

Is Chada in Mahale?

No. Chada is in Katavi National Park. Mahale is a separate western Tanzania destination that may be combined with Katavi when flights and time allow.

What are the rooms like?

The camp has six classic safari tents with en-suite facilities and bucket showers. It is a bush-camp experience rather than a large lodge.

When should we plan a Katavi safari?

The dry season is a common starting point for planning, but opening dates, flights and the conditions expected during your particular month should be checked.

Can we add chimpanzee tracking?

A stay in Mahale can add chimpanzee tracking to a western itinerary. Tracking requirements, permits and flight connections are separate from the Katavi stay.
