Our take

About Greystoke Mahale

Greystoke Mahale is a remote and extraordinary camp set on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, at the foot of the forested Mahale Mountains in western Tanzania. It offers one of the most unique safari experiences in Africa, where days are spent tracking wild chimpanzees through lush rainforest and evenings are enjoyed beside a tranquil, crystal-clear lake.

Accessible only by boat, Greystoke Mahale is wildly secluded, yet beautifully crafted to blend into its surroundings. Built with reclaimed dhow wood and thatched palm, the lodge feels like a castaway retreat, infused with barefoot luxury and a deep connection to nature. The camp is renowned for its authenticity, exceptional guiding, and its close partnership with local communities and conservation efforts, offering a deeply meaningful wilderness experience.

Accommodation

Rooms

Greystoke has eight open-fronted bandas built from reclaimed dhow wood, with Lake Tanganyika in front and the forested mountains behind. The design keeps you close to the setting rather than creating an enclosed hotel room. We check the available room configuration and access requirements for your party before confirming a stay.

Food & drink

Dining

Dining at Greystoke Mahale is a communal and sociable affair, with meals shared in the main mess area overlooking the lake or sometimes right on the sand. The food is fresh, creative and satisfying, with much of the produce sourced locally. Whether it’s a relaxed breakfast, a lakeside lunch or dinner by lantern light, the setting is always atmospheric, complemented by fine wine and warm, attentive service.

What to do

Activities

The highlight of any stay at Greystoke is tracking the wild chimpanzees of the Mahale Mountains, an unforgettable experience led by expert guides and trackers. Guests also enjoy forest hikes, kayaking on the lake, snorkelling, and swimming in its clear, refreshing waters. Evenings are often spent on dhow cruises, watching the sun set over Congo’s distant mountains, making each day an adventure filled with wonder and discovery.

Planning your stay

How Greystoke Mahale fits your journey.

We would start with at least three or four nights, then fit the stay to the available flight pattern. Chimpanzee trekking is the principal reason to come, but lake time and the remote setting deserve room in the itinerary. Pair with Chada Katavi for a western Tanzania safari with contrasting wildlife; the logistics should shape the sequence before international flights are booked.

The right fit

Would Greystoke Mahale suit you?

Who it suits

Travellers whose interest in chimpanzees and remote wilderness outweighs the convenience of a straightforward northern circuit. We would consider it for active couples and experienced safari guests who enjoy a distinctive camp with an open-fronted design.

Things to consider

Forest walks can be steep and variable in length because the chimpanzees move freely. Sightings cannot be guaranteed. Access involves a flight and a boat transfer, so this is a stay to plan around rather than a casual addition. Trekking age, fitness and current park requirements need checking for your party.

Useful to know

Greystoke Mahale FAQs.

How do you get to Greystoke Mahale?

The usual journey combines a flight to Mahale with a boat transfer along Lake Tanganyika. Flight patterns can limit which arrival and departure dates work, so we plan this stay before finalising the wider itinerary.

Is chimpanzee trekking guaranteed at Greystoke?

No. The chimpanzees are wild and move through the forest. Guides and trackers help locate them, but the distance, duration and outcome of a trek vary. We allow time for the experience rather than promise a particular sighting.

How demanding is the walking at Mahale?

Treks can involve steep ground, humid conditions and uneven forest paths. Tell us about your fitness and mobility before booking so that we can discuss the likely demands and current participation requirements.

Is Greystoke a beach resort?

It has a beautiful lakeshore setting, but the central experience is Mahale’s forest and chimpanzees. It is on freshwater Lake Tanganyika, not the Indian Ocean, and works differently from a Zanzibar resort stay.

Can Greystoke be combined with Chada Katavi?

Yes. The pairing creates a western Tanzania journey with forest primates, lake scenery and a contrasting safari in Katavi. We arrange the sequence around seasonal operation and available flights.
