Our take

About Lamai Private

Lamai Private is a small, exclusive-use lodge in the northern Serengeti, designed for families and friends who want their own corner of the national park. Set around the Kogakuria Kopje, it combines a broad view over the plains with a dedicated camp team and private safari arrangements. It makes an appealing base for a group that values time together as much as wildlife viewing, with a swimming pool, generous decks and space to settle into a comfortable daily rhythm.

The private lodge sits separately from Lamai’s main eight-room camp. Its design works with the boulders and the contours of the kopje, keeping the surrounding landscape central to the experience. Natural materials and locally made furnishings give the interiors a relaxed, considered character. Having your own lounge and dining space changes the feel of a safari: there is room for conversations to run late, for quieter afternoons and for different generations to spend time together without sharing communal areas with other guests.

01

Accommodation

Rooms

There are four open-fronted rooms, each with an en-suite bathroom, a veranda and views across the Serengeti. The open design brings birdsong and the sounds of the bush into the room, while the decks provide somewhere to read or watch the changing light. This is a private safari lodge rather than a collection of hotel suites. We check the exact sleeping arrangements and family configuration against the ages and preferences of everyone in your group before reserving the whole property.

Food & drink

Dining

Meals are served in your own camp mess, with an attentive team looking after the group. The setting encourages sociable breakfasts, unhurried lunches and dinners that become part of the evening rather than an interruption to it. Discuss food preferences and children’s requirements in advance so the kitchen can plan properly. A private camp allows more flexibility around when the group eats, particularly when a longer wildlife outing takes you away from the lodge.

What to do

Activities

Private game drives explore the northern Serengeti, where resident predators and plains game reward time spent away from the busiest sightings. When the migration is in the north, the Mara River is within driving reach; a crossing can never be promised. Guided bush walks offer a different perspective on tracks, plants and the kopje landscape, subject to age restrictions and local conditions. Back at camp, the pool and private decks are a good reason to leave some afternoons free.

Planning your stay

How Lamai Private fits your journey.

Three or four nights lets one party settle into a private rhythm, with time for longer drives and slower afternoons. Add Ngorongoro for a broader northern circuit. A second Serengeti stop is most useful when it introduces a different habitat rather than another similar northern camp.

The right fit

Would Lamai Private suit you?

Who it suits

Families and friends who want exclusive use and a dedicated team, while retaining an open-fronted safari-lodge atmosphere. Room allocation is especially important for a mixed-age group.

Things to consider

Four rooms do not automatically mean the same suitability for four couples, parents with children or guests with mobility requirements. Discuss the room layout, paths and open design before confirming.

Useful to know

Lamai Private FAQs.

Is Lamai Private reserved for one party?

Yes. It is a separate exclusive-use lodge with four open-fronted rooms, rather than a private room category within the main lodge.

How does it differ from Mkombe’s House?

Both are private northern Serengeti options, but their bedroom and living arrangements differ. Mkombe’s includes enclosed children’s rooms; we compare the layouts for your group.

Is Lamai Private a river-crossing guarantee?

No. Its northern position is useful when the herds are in the wider Mara River region, but wildlife movements and crossing times remain unpredictable.

Can it suit a multigenerational safari?

Potentially. Exclusive use makes the daily rhythm easier to tailor, but we check room allocation, access and activities for every member of the party.
