Wildlife
The crater floor supports lion, elephant, buffalo, hippo and a small population of black rhino. Its concentration of wildlife is remarkable, although the main descent routes can become busy.
Northern Tanzania
Concentrated wildlife within an extraordinary volcanic landscape.
Our take
One full crater visit is usually enough. Two nights allow an early descent and time for the highlands, while Karatu works well for farms, walks and a softer pace.
Ngorongoro is a remarkable contrast to the open Serengeti: a highland landscape surrounding a concentrated wildlife experience on the crater floor. The descent is memorable, but it is also popular. Starting early and choosing a stay that suits your route can make the day feel more considered. We would avoid treating the crater as a quick tick on a long transfer day.
One well-planned crater visit is enough for many travellers. Two nights nearby give room for an early descent and time to appreciate the cooler rim, walks where available and the wider highland setting. Karatu can offer a gentler farm or garden stay, while rim lodges prioritise the crater outlook and early access. These are quite different experiences, even though they appear together in an accommodation search.
Ngorongoro sits naturally between Tarangire or Lake Manyara and the Serengeti. We choose the property around the route and your preferred pace, then set realistic expectations about other vehicles and the chance of seeing rare species. The lodge collection below includes both crater and highland options.

Wildlife viewing is reliable year-round. June to October is drier; January to March combines particularly well with the southern Serengeti.

The Manor at Ngorongoro brings a country-house atmosphere to a northern Tanzania safari, set on the Shangri-La coffee estate near Karatu. Its Cape Dutch architecture, gardens and cottage suites offer a comfortable contrast to tented camps in the Serengeti. The Highlands offers a distinctive base on the forested slopes of Olmoti in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, combining crater wildlife with highland exploration. Olmoti’s wooded slopes, rolling hills and volcanic scenery distinguish the location from the grassy plains farther north. The domes frame this highland landscape, while excursions can reach the wildlife of the Ngorongoro Crater. Its appeal is therefore wider than a convenient overnight stop: the surrounding terrain, architecture and guided walks each contribute to the stay.
