Wildlife
Tarangire is especially known for large elephant herds, but also supports lion, leopard, giraffe, buffalo and excellent birdlife. Its baobab-studded landscape feels distinct from the Serengeti.

Northern Tanzania
Elephants, baobabs and a rewarding start to the northern circuit.
Our take
Allow two or three nights rather than treating Tarangire as a transit stop. It combines naturally with Ngorongoro and the Serengeti by road or light aircraft.
Tarangire deserves more than a passing night on the way to Ngorongoro. Its baobab landscapes and elephant country feel different from the Serengeti, and the Tarangire River becomes increasingly important to wildlife as the dry season progresses. In the greener months the park is quieter and birdlife is excellent, though animals are more dispersed. The right expectation depends on your dates.
We would normally allow two or three nights so there is time to explore beyond the busiest entrance area. A camp inside the park and a stay in the wider ecosystem can offer different activities and daily rhythms. We compare driving distances, guiding and what is actually possible from each property before recommending one. Kuro Tarangire, Oliver’s Camp and Chem Chem each suit a different style of journey.
Tarangire works particularly well as the first safari stop from Arusha, followed by Ngorongoro and the Serengeti. We plan the number of nights and direction of travel around the season rather than adding parks simply to make a longer list.

June to October is strongest as animals gather around the Tarangire River. The greener months bring birdlife, dramatic skies and fewer visitors.

Tarangire
Tarangire Treetops is one of northern Tanzania’s most recognisable lodges, with elevated rooms built among mature baobab and marula trees. It sits in Randilen Wildlife Management Area, outside Tarangire National Park, combining access to the park’s wildlife with activities in the surrounding conservation landscape. The appeal is as much the experience of staying above the ground as the game viewing: private balconies, open views and a distinctive sense of space.

Tarangire
Oliver’s Camp occupies a quieter part of southern Tarangire, close to the Silale Swamps and their dry-season concentrations of wildlife. Southern Tarangire combines baobabs, woodland and the Silale wetland landscape. During the dry months, permanent water draws wildlife into this part of the park, giving the location a particular seasonal significance. The camp’s open decks and traditional tents allow that landscape to remain present during quiet hours as well as on a guided outing.
